Dear Class,
Please take a look at
the blog http://antibullyingblog.blogspot.com/. You should write your comments on various
aspects of the blog here, and begin to think about some thoughts, comments, etc.
that you would like to add to the in-class discussion, which will be taking
place in the near future.
The blog discusses various
aspects on bullying from cyber bullying to taking a stance against
bullying. Like the previous blog
assignments, you can look at the layout/presentation of the blog and voice your
opinions or thoughts about it. You can
also take a look at any of the posts on the blog. It might be helpful to ask yourself have you
ever witnessed someone being bullied or even been bullied yourself. Have fun visiting the site and make sure you
come to class ready to talk about it.
Thanks!
This website is oddly plain, maybe giving the vibe that its intended for giving audience a direct approach on bullying. The various topics and people who have been bullied, also those who speak on the topic in general. The video with Joe Jonas speaking on bullying caught my eye for some reason. More importantly, he made great points, especially on how to think about things. He says "its easy to hate things, but you were chosen to be on this earth, and that should be something special to you." Having positive outlooks is one temporary method in handling those who bully, its a counteractive method that shows the bully he has no effect and gets no enjoyment. From experience I learned to pay them no mind, once they see that you dont give them attention or fear, they dont have no reasons or logic to bother you anymore.
ReplyDeleteI think your point is great. I strongly agree with your attitude about how to react when being bullied (except for extreme cases). The video showing Joe Jonas's opinion is also a good notice. If you could bring your opinion to the class discussion tomorrow, my group will sincerely appreciate.
DeleteThe first thing that I think would pop out first to any viewer is how plain and colorless this blog is. Traditionally black and white together symbolize mourning and cheerless occasions. Bullying is not a subject, obviously, to be cheerful about. I went to high school with a girl who was threatened with a gun on several occasions in middle school, but was too afraid of what would happen if she was to tell anyone. I know it still bothers her today, which is a shame because she is one of the most beautiful, intelligent girls I know, who is currently on a cross country scholarship at Miami. I think its great that blogs like this exist, and encourage people not to turn a blind eye to it. Just because you don't think it's a problem at your school, doesn't mean it isn't. The articles seem to cover a wide variety of possible bulling scenarios, which are very informative, such as the cyber bulling video.
ReplyDeleteThe blog is very plain which is similar to the other blogs we have been looking at. The website is white with bold black titles. Making the website black and white and very plain was a good choice because it allows the readers to focus on what is important on the site which is obviously bullying. The box on the right that said, "need help with bullying? write about your experience and someone will respond to you." I think that is a very good idea because a lot of people who are bullied are afraid to talk about it with people they know so this box lets them be anonymous while also getting the help they need. The website overall is a very good website trying to stop bullying and cyber bullying.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first opened the Anti- Bullying Blog, I noticed many similarities and differences from the previous blogs we used in class. I can tell that this blog is updated pretty frequently, much like the racialicous blog and it also has a simple array for users to navigate the page easily. However, many of the posts on this blog are videos, which can get annoying to open and watch every time you want to learn more about certain issue. This can have a strong affect on the blog, for example, the video titled “From No limbs To No Limits”. Without the use of a video on this post, the message would not be as strongly put across. I watched the video on cyber bullying and it’s sad that I see something like this on a daily basis. Technology of today, makes it so easy to communicate with others from anywhere in the world, but many kids use this privilege in a negative way. With the use of Facebook and twitter, sometimes the person being bullied has no idea someone is looking at his/her profile, or that there are kids sending mass pictures of you via email doing something you would not want anyone to see. My rule of thumb for anything I put online is that if I don’t want the whole world to see it, than I wont put it up online. Facebook has a report comment option and report abuse tool that you can use to help combat cyber bullying, but there definitely should be more ways the administrators can have us help out.
ReplyDeleteThe Anti-Bully Blog is very similar to a newspaper theme. Main colors that are used throughout the entire site are black and white. The font size just differs for the different headings. The topics of the headings are all geared towards different bullying aspects. For example, this website has a trailer of the Bully documentary, it also has some personal bullying stories. There are also methods to help combat bullying on the website as well. Even though the website is pretty basic, it still gets the point across very well. It is easy and simple to use and follow. Take a Stand, Stop the Hate, Stop the epidemic are some of the headings that are very concise and these strands and phrases all follow the anti bully theme. This website also has songs of the day and videos made by the public that will help bring awareness and help prevent this bullying epidemic. The Anti- Bully Blog also contains resources to help people who are being bullied, which is very important for people to know that there are many resources to assist people who are being victimized by bullies. In addition, this blog contains pop culture news, for example videos and articles about Demi Lovato and some TLC shows; similar to the feministing and racialicious blogging websites.
ReplyDeleteUpon opening The Anti-Bully blog, the first thing I noticed was that it was mostly black and white. This was somewhat unlike the other blogs we have viewed, because they had some sort of pop of color to draw attention to their logo or to certain words. The only color in this blog is in the pictures within the articles and in the ads on the right side of the page. I found this to be distracting from the content of the website. While my eyes were being drawn toward the ads, I noticed a menu full of materials designed to help combat against bullying, such as motivational quotes, anti-bullying slogans, and anti-bullying pictures to print out and hang in classrooms. The slogans were quite simple and seemed to be geared toward young children, probably not older than middle school. The quotes seem to be more geared toward older children, and those who can understand more complex language. One quote says, “Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all – the apathy of human beings.” –Helen Keller. This is a good resource for a victim of bullying of any age, because there is something there that almost any age group can understand and relate to.
ReplyDeleteI think your point on slogans and quotes is great. I didn't notice the age aspect when I first went to the blog. I thought it was just something showing variety, but after seeing it again, I find your point really reasonable. Could you please bring this idea to class discussion tomorrow? Thanks a lot
DeleteAfter viewing the anti-bully blog i noticed many topics are on the release on the upcoming film "Bully" this could be because it is a very strong argument of why bullying should be stopped now. After watching the trailer any person in their right mind would agree. Also the website overall is very bland suggesting that the main focus be on the topic being expressed. Another thing that i liked was the t-shirts on the side. I liked the way that kids or parents could join the battle and inspire others by purchasing a shirt and wearing it every now and then. It was an interesting blog site with many different cases of bullying.
ReplyDeleteThe T-shirt part is quite a creative design. Thank you for pointing it out.I strongly agree with you that wearing anti-bully T-shirts would be a fancy and strong slogan in pop culture. Hope you could bring this detail that you noticed to class discussion tomorrow. We'll really appreciate it.
DeleteThe first thing that caught my eyes when I looked at this site was the color scheme(black and white).I think that the idea behind the color black and white was to inform everyone that no one should be bullied regardless their color, race,or ethnicity. The website antibullyingblog.com basically inform the readers about the bullying epidemic that is going on. There are several tips for parents and their children whom is being bullied. The video Stand-Up by Mike Tompkins is a powerful video because its purpose is to empower the victims and to let them know that they can face any challenges. I believe Justin Bieber's song Born to be Somebody is also stating the same message as Mike Tompkins.
ReplyDeleteI like your understanding about the logo. Others generally consider the design as a method to guide viewers directly to the contents. However, as an activism blog, dark color probably has some deeper meaning. Thanks for pointing this out. Hope you could talk about this in class discussion tomorrow. We'll really appreciate it.
DeleteThe site first appeared to be plain in comparison to the last to sites that we have examined. This blog works primarily with a black and white color scheme with a slight lack of media imagery. Some might say that this makes the site unappealing and undesirable to read. However, I believe that this plain styled characteristic is effective for the topic of this blog. The Anti-Bully Blog is discussing a very serious and important subject. The site doesn't want to fill its page with pretty colors or pictures to distract from the seriousness of what the text is trying to get across. The sites keeps up to date a regularly posts new articles. There are numerous articles on this site to read and really appeals to pathos creating a general sense of bully awareness and an anti-bullying mindset for the readers. They allow readers to post comments, have celebrities like Joe Jonas post videos on the matter, and have anti-bullying apparel to help promote their cause. I appreciate this site and what it stands for and believe that even though the site may seem plain, that it still does an effective job of portraying their message to its readers.
ReplyDeleteAnother plain straight-forward blog site. Im not too impressed with it. I mean of course the topic is an important one, because when kids are bullied to an extreme, there can be real life altering or ending concequences. But I don't feel like this website is perticularly captivating in any way. I feel like they don't do a very good job of interesting the reader. Overall, I'm not a fan. The only thing that I liked about it was the T-shirts, but other than that, not much.
ReplyDeleteUpon reading this blog, I noticed that again it had a very plain layout and background. The second thing I noticed was that the entries had a slight difference from previous blogs that I have read. The entries in this blog where very short and you have to click on each and every one of them in order to get a real feel for what was in the article, whereas in previous ones there was a good paragraph or two to get you drawn in and then you would click on the link if you were interested enough to learn more. The thing I really liked was that on the side there was a lineup of anti bullying t-shirts that had very clever words on them. Overall, I like the blog and think that it was pretty informative about the topic of Bullying.
ReplyDeleteMy first thoughts to this site is how plain the site is, and the fact that it looks like something that was thrown together. The site does not have the easiest navigation, and part of that is simply because of the simplicity and part is the amount of other stuff on the page. There are far more ads on this blog than the other ones we have looked at, and it shows how easily a page can get cluttered. There are links to more sites associated with this blog than to actual articles here- facebook and other social sites, where to buy a t-shirt, where to donate to the blog, and more. I don't have a great feeling about this site; it feels more commercialized and less focused on the problem of bullying, even though they tried to cover all forms of bullying.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw this site I thought it was bland and my have not had too much thought behind the design or theme. This makes me think that maybe the site creator did not really care that much about the site or the cause. The next thing I noticed about the site was that instead of articles the blog had videos about bullying. Having no articles by contributors to the blog and only videos, that could essentially be pulled of a YouTube channel, it makes one wonder about how many people are behind this blog and if they are very serious about the issue. The ads on the side of the site could just be a way of funding or it could be a signal that the site is not backed by a big contributor to the cause relating a lack of authority on the subject. The ads could go either way depending on the situation.
ReplyDelete“This is an black and white blog. “ when I first see this blog, these are the words that came into my mind. This is the first time in a normal condition that I have seen a black and white block. I am saying this because in the really sad conditions, the websites will all be changed into black and white to show the respect of the casualty. I think the blog is designed black and white to show that anti-bully is a very serious topic in the designer’s mind. Though the main colors of this blog are black and white, it is not boring. The blog is designed simple but concise. If you roll down the fist page, we will find that the left side of this index is the space for those blogs posted, the right side of the blog is the place for advertisement, popularity ranking, anti-bully stores, etc. The blogs is easy to be followed. Each article or video posted will be companied with its posting date and its bold title. So even when the readers roll down the webpage quickly, they can still tell each blog from one another. Make a blog easy to follow is a wise idea because people usually do not have that much time to look at all the postings. What people usually do is first look at the webpage in general and then choose what they are interested in. So I think this blog has done a good job in attracting its readers by making its webpage easy to follow.
